About us
About Finance Business Debt
Finance Business Debt is an information website for UK business owners who want to understand their borrowing before they change it. We explain consolidation, refinancing, restructuring and funding options in plain English, and where it is appropriate and you ask us to, we may introduce you to third-party finance providers or specialist advisers.
Make a free enquiry
Tell us a little about your business and we will explain the options. No obligation, and enquiring does not involve a credit search.
Who this site is for
Written for UK businesses with borrowing to manage
Most of our readers already have finance in place and want to know whether it could be structured better. Others are looking for funding for the first time and want to understand the choices before they speak to anyone. The content is written for both.
Limited companies
Directors weighing up loans, overdrafts, cards and advances taken out at different times, often with personal guarantees attached.
LLPs and partnerships
Partners who share liability for the firm's borrowing and need to understand how a change in finance affects each of them.
Sole traders
Owners who are personally liable for business debts, and for whom smaller agreements are regulated consumer credit with additional protections.
Businesses seeking funding
Trading businesses that need working capital, cash flow support or asset finance and want to compare the categories before applying.
Whatever the structure, the questions tend to be the same. What does this borrowing really cost? Could one facility replace several? Would a longer term help or hurt? Is borrowing the right answer at all? Our finance solutions pages and business debt help section are built around those questions.
What we do
Information first, introductions only when you ask
What we do
We explain how each type of business finance works, who it tends to suit, what it costs, where the risks sit and what the alternatives are. Every solution page follows the same structure so that options can be compared fairly.
When you make an enquiry, we talk through your existing finance and the categories of option that may be relevant to it. Where appropriate, and only at your request, we may introduce you to third-party finance providers or specialist advisers. Those providers assess your business on their own criteria and issue their own terms.
We also publish tools such as the debt comparison tool and the finance options guide, which are educational and do not assess eligibility.
What we do not do
We are not a lender. We do not provide finance ourselves and have no say in whether a provider offers you terms or what those terms are.
We do not give regulated financial advice. The information on this site is general and does not take account of your individual circumstances. A decision to borrow, refinance or consolidate is yours, and you may want independent professional advice before making it.
We are not an insolvency practitioner, debt counsellor, HMRC agent or law firm. Where a business cannot pay its debts as they fall due, we signpost free help such as Business Debtline and explain when a licensed insolvency practitioner may be needed. Our regulatory information page sets out our status in full.
Our editorial standards
The rules every page on this site is written to
Business finance content is easy to get wrong and easy to oversell. These are the standards we hold ourselves to, and we would rather be told where we have fallen short than have a reader rely on something inaccurate.
-
Accuracy
We describe how products work, what the Consumer Credit Act regulates and how HMRC and insolvency processes operate using current UK rules. Illustrative figures are labelled as illustrative. We do not publish statistics we cannot support.
-
Balance of risks and benefits
Every option is presented with its drawbacks alongside its advantages. A lower monthly payment is shown next to the longer term that usually produces it. Security, personal guarantees, fees and early repayment charges are mentioned wherever they apply.
-
No guaranteed outcomes
We never promise approval, savings, lower rates or a particular result. Whether finance is offered, and on what terms, depends on a provider's assessment of your business.
-
Signposting free help
Where new borrowing is unlikely to solve the problem, we say so and point to Business Debtline, GOV.UK and licensed insolvency practitioners. Outbound links are references, not endorsements.
-
Review process
Pages are checked against these standards before publication and revisited when rules, schemes or market practice change. If you spot an error, our contact page is the quickest way to tell us.
How we are paid
Free to use, with any commission disclosed
Reading this site and making an enquiry costs you nothing and places you under no obligation. We do not charge you for an introduction.
Where we introduce a business to a finance provider or adviser and that business goes on to take out a facility or engage the adviser, we may receive a commission or fee from that third party. The existence and basis of any such arrangement is disclosed on our regulatory information page and again before any introduction is made, so that you know how we are remunerated before you decide whether to proceed.
A commission arrangement does not change the information we publish. The same costs, risks and alternatives appear on every page whether or not an introduction follows. Any fee charged to you directly by a provider or adviser will be set out by them, in writing, before you commit to anything. Our how it works page explains the process step by step.
Company details
Who is behind the site
Finance Business Debt is a trading name. Our registered company details appear in the footer of every page and on our regulatory information page, together with our regulatory status and the statements we are and are not permitted to make. Our privacy policy explains how enquiry data is handled, and our complaints procedure explains what to do if something has gone wrong.
If you would like to talk through your situation, or simply want to check something you have read here, use the contact page. We will tell you plainly what we can help with and where another service would serve you better.
