Draft for professional review
This page was prepared as a draft and must be reviewed and approved by a suitably qualified adviser, with all bracketed placeholders completed, before the website goes live.
Information only
The content of www.financebusinessdebt.co.uk, operated by [[COMPANY_LEGAL_NAME]] trading as Finance Business Debt, is published for general information about business debt and business finance in the United Kingdom. It describes how different finance options work, who they may suit and what they typically cost. It does not take account of your business's particular circumstances, objectives or financial position.
Not advice
Nothing on this site is, or should be treated as, financial advice, legal advice, tax advice, accounting advice, insolvency advice or investment advice. We are not authorised to give regulated advice, and no part of the content is a personal recommendation. Where the site explains an option, it does so to help you understand it, not to tell you to choose it.
No reliance
You should not rely on the content of this site as the basis for any decision. Before taking on new borrowing, changing existing arrangements, entering into a personal guarantee, approaching HMRC or a creditor, or taking any step that could affect your business's solvency, obtain advice from a suitably qualified professional who knows your situation. Any reliance you place on the content is at your own risk.
Illustrative figures and tools
Any figures on this site, including worked examples and the outputs of our debt comparison tool and finance options guide, are illustrative estimates. They use the assumptions you enter or that are stated on the page, they simplify the way real products work, and they are not quotes, offers or indications of what any provider will offer you. Real rates, fees and terms vary between providers and change over time.
Eligibility and terms are set by providers
Finance Business Debt is not a lender. Every finance provider sets its own eligibility criteria, carries out its own assessment of affordability and creditworthiness, and decides its own rates, fees and terms. Descriptions of eligibility on this site are general and may not match what a particular provider requires. A description of a product on this site does not mean you will be offered it.
Risk warnings
Borrowing carries risk
Think carefully before securing other debts against your business's property or assets, and before signing a personal guarantee. If you cannot keep up repayments, you could lose the secured asset, and a guarantor could be pursued personally.
- Security. Secured finance gives the provider rights over property, equipment, invoices or other assets. Those assets can be taken and sold if the agreement is not kept.
- Personal guarantees. Most unsecured lending to limited companies requires a director's personal guarantee. If the company cannot pay, the provider can pursue the guarantor's personal assets, including their home.
- Longer terms increase the total repaid. Spreading a balance over more months lowers each payment but means interest is charged for longer. The total you repay can be higher even when the rate is lower.
- Variable rates. Where the rate is linked to the Bank of England base rate or another benchmark, your repayments can go up as well as down.
- Early repayment charges. Settling a facility early, including the facilities you are consolidating, may trigger fees or interest to the end of the term. These must be included when comparing options.
- Fees. Arrangement, valuation, legal, monitoring and broker fees add to the cost and may be added to the balance, attracting interest.
- Borrowing to solve insolvency. If your business cannot pay its debts as they fall due, new borrowing can make matters worse, and directors may owe duties to creditors. Take advice from a licensed insolvency practitioner or a free advice service first.
